"Nightwater" is a term used by Men and sometimes Dwarves to refer to strange, magical water that only springs forth after nightfall. It is an always clean, clear, crisp, and refreshing liquid that shimmers and glows faintly as if infused with moonlight itself. Drinking of the water will make most creatures that are not Fay fall into a deep and strange sleep full of dreams and visions.

Fay Connection

The Nightwater certainly seems to have some kind of Fay connection. It does not seem to affect Fay creatures, such as the Elves that occasionally partake of it.

However, due to this connection to the Fay realm, Nightwater affects other creatures who may drink it. Men and Dwarves in particular are known to fall into strange sleep soon after drinking. This sleep is full of dreams and visions that may or may not be real in some way, perhaps even taking place in the Fay realm. Others claim to have had very real visions of the future after drinking Nightwater, like some sort of prophet or shaman.

Occurrences

Nightwater is extremely rare. It may occur only in the deepest and wildest of places, such as the heart of an ancient, magical forest or high in secluded mountains. It always flows forth only from the earth itself in a very small spring, never anything as large as a stream, pond, river, or lake. It is generally surrounded by lush growth of some kind, often healthy beds of moss. It is said that many elves tend to Nightwater springs across the realm, enjoying its wonderfully crisp and refreshing taste without suffering its effects. Nightwater only flows from its hidden springs after the sun has set and disappears again when the day returns.
