Fintan is a grouchy old hill dwarf, a traveling trader known for his skills in healing and cooking, his exceptionally small stature, and his very bad attitude. He travels all across Northrim and the Achaean Empire in a great wagon pulled by a red ox, though when in cities, he uses a smaller wagon pulled by his trusty donkey.

Biography

Fintan was born in the Dwaerrodowns and lived there for many years as a priest of Frigga, performing rituals and tending the sick and wounded. Fintan doesn't disclose why, but he left his home suddenly and became a trader. He has traveled far and wide over Northrim and much of Achaea, primarily dealing in herbs, spices, medicines, and weeds, many of which are unique among the hill dwarves and unknown to Men.

Description

With his stark white hair and aged features, Fintan must be an extremely old dwarf, though he doesn't disclose his age. His white beard is so long he tucks it into his belt, and he is already very short for a dwarf. Unusual for his kind, he is relatively skinny, though not to the point of feeling frail. He has blue eyes that glare from beneath bushy white eyebrows, and his face is heavily wrinkled from age and sun. He has a deep voice full of gravel, aided by his incessant smoking of pipe-weed, and smells always of herbs. He usually wears a broad, blue hat and nearly always has a long wooden pipe between his teeth.

Personality

Put simply, Fintan is a grouchy old man. He hates being bothered by anyone other than a well-paying customer, and he views humanity as arrogant and stupid, elves as arrogant and unapproachable, and his fellow dwarves (ironically) as swindlers. Despite his greed and grumpiness, there's a heart hidden somewhere in the old dwarf, and he retains the fabled dwarven loyalty to his few friends, no matter how much he complains incessantly when aiding them. With a foul mouth, a foul temper, and a foul attitude, Fintan isn't always the easiest to be around, particularly if one is a patient under his terrible bedside manner. If given enough motivation through money, drink, or genuine companionship, however, Fintan may even show a softer side.

Fintan is a main character in The Prophecy of the Six, and he has appeared in Knightfall.
