The sphinx is a legendary creature appearing often throughout Kemhet and the Achaean Empire in various forms. Some conisder them to be chimerans, while others claim they are far more mysterious or even divine in nature.

Appearance

Sphinxes have the body of a lion, wings of a bird, and the head of a man or woman. They generally dwell in the desert, though some inhabit other regions. They are capable of speech and are often considered loquacious.

Nature

The motives of the sphinx are very unclear. Many seem to serve as guardians of a particular treasure or location, sometimes even guarding ancient Kemheti tombs; in tales, they often enjoy asking riddles of travelers and sometimes even rewarding those who answer correctly, sometimes with treasure or pieces of wisdom, even predictions of the future. Others act more as predators, roaming and stalking travelers. They are considered extremely intelligent and dangerous, unpredictable and as likely to let travelers go as to take their lives.
