"Potential Energy" (Plutarch's Tale) is a Wulfgard short story by Justin R. R. Stebbins, which tells the story of Septimus Plutarch first discovering his magical gift. It can be read on the Wulfgard website Stories page.
Synopsis
Septimus Plutarch is a man of great ambition. A younger son chafing against his father's whishes, he tries to forge his own plan for his future. Then one day, he discovers he has a special gift that changes everything.
